Head Coach Tom Lang
Since Tom Lang took over in 1997 as the third head soccer coach in Southern Connecticut history, the Owls have been close to perfect.
Following a semifinal loss in 1997, Lang's teams followed with back-to-back NCAA championships in 1998 and 1999, extending the Owls' string to six national titles since 1987, a Division II record for most championships.
In 2000, the Owls missed the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1991, but rebounded to earn berths in each of the last two seasons.
Lang's Owls have a six-year record of 105-13-9, winning more than 86 percent of their games. He was honored in 1998 and 1999 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) as the Division II Coach of the Year.
Before coming to Southern, Lang spent seven seasons as the head men's coach at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
A 1981 graduate of Adelphi University, Lang was a forward and three-year captain for the Panthers. He played on four straight NCAA tournament teams, including the1974 Division II national championship team. He is believed to be the only person to have won a Division II title as both a player and a head coach.
Lang was also playing at Adelphi when the Panthers moved from NCAA Division II to Division I and earned a tournament berth in their first season, 1976. He went on to play professionally in the North American Soccer League (NASL) with the New York Cosmos, Atlanta Chiefs and Caribous of Colorado.
Lang, who was an Adelphi assistant coach, was named head men's coach at Hofstra University in 1982. His Flying Dutchmen had winning records each year and captured the 1985 East Coast Conference title.
He returned to Adelphi as head women's coach in 1987 and, in three seasons, established one of the top programs in the nation. Lang's 1989 team received a NCAA tournament berth with a 10-7-1 won-lost-tied record.
His FDU teams reached the Northeast Conference (NEC) championship game in 1990 and 1992.
Lang also coached the Lynbrook (N.Y.) over-30 men's team (1984 U.S. federation champion) and serves as an Olympic Development Program (ODP) coach. Inducted into the Adelphi Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994, he currently resides in Wallingford with his wife, Doreen, and daughters, Megan and Kelly.
Josh Krusewski
Josh Krusewski, who earned his undergraduate degree from Southern, returns this season as an assistant coach. The Wallingford, Conn., native comes to the Owls after serving as an assistant for Coach Ray Reid at the University of Connecticut where the Huskies won the 2001 Big East championship.
Krusewski, a former member of the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) referee's professional list, was a Connecticut Olympic Development coach. He is a former head coach at North Haven High School; former director of coaching and player development for Northeast United premier; and former director of the Ray Reid Soccer School.
Krusewski, who worked as a member of the Southern staff during the NCAA Division II championship seasons in 1998 and 1999.
